Discover Niva Kurumba’s hidden gems through the eyes of Eden our resident marine biologist

Honouring the Ocean

The ocean gives us so much: sustenance, serenity, and adventure. As we honour Earth Month this April, we are reminded of our connection to the sea. We believe in a harmonious reciprocity, giving back to the ocean just as generously as it gives to us. This philosophy is a guiding principle that shapes every facet of our island sanctuary.

Our island home is surrounded by a fragile marine ecosystem, a delicate world susceptible to high temperatures, pollution, and overfishing. Through constant research and restoration projects, we preserve the breathtaking biodiversity that surrounds our shores.

A Guardian of the Reef

At the heart of our conservation efforts is Eden Chin, our accredited resident marine biologist. With a background in coral reef ecology, Eden brings immense knowledge and passion to Niva Kurumba. Her work ensures that our crystal-clear waters continue to thrive with life.

Eden leads ongoing research and preservation projects across the property. She guides our understanding of the reef, noting the subtle shifts in the ecosystem. Under her careful watch, vulnerable reef sites are propagated with climate-resilient corals, ensuring the long-term vitality of our underwater world.

Her presence transforms a holiday into a deeply meaningful experience. Whether you are observing the graceful glide of a batfish or listening to the calming, rhythmic sound of parrotfish grazing on algae, Eden is there to illuminate the wonders of the deep.

The Coral Sanctuary: Restoring the Reef

Healthy corals form the living, breathing foundation of the reef ecosystem. Knowing the pressures these delicate structures face globally, we operate several vital coral nurseries within our tranquil lagoon. This is our coral sanctuary, a safe haven where young and damaged corals are given the opportunity to recover.

Inside the calm, shallow waters of the lagoon, metal coral frames and ropes create a nurturing environment. Here, Eden carefully attaches small coral fragments. Sheltered from strong currents, these fragments settle and acclimatise. Once they reach a healthy size, they are transferred to the outer reef to flourish.

This painstaking work supports a dazzling array of marine life. By restoring the reef, we provide a thriving habitat for butterflyfish, surgeonfish, groupers, anemonefish, and turtles, amongst others. It is a fulfilling process that strengthens the resilience of the reef, ensuring it remains a flourishing underwater garden for generations to come.

Immersive Preservation Experiences

We offer unique, hands-on opportunities for you to engage directly in coral restoration. The experience of nurturing nature is deeply stirring and during your stay, you can help maintain our underwater nurseries, clean the coral frames, and plant new fragments that will one day grow into coral colonies. It is a peaceful, grounding experience that allows you to leave a living legacy in the Maldives.

Beyond the lagoon, Eden leads eco-snorkelling tours and glass-bottom boat trips. Glide over the house reef, where visibility stretches flawlessly beneath you, and observe the spectacular branching and boulder corals. These guided excursions offer a window into the complex, beautiful balance of the marine ecosystem. For a deeper immersion, join our ‘Maldivian Reef Voyage’ to explore two distinct reefs, home to vibrant corals, sea turtles, and mobula rays. For the adventurous, our ‘Shark Point Snorkelling’ trip offers a rare opportunity to swim alongside gentle nurse sharks.

Meet our Resident Sea Turtles

We share our waters with seven resident sea turtles: Hawkeye, Kurumba, Ruby, Evergreen, Jedi, Aventurine, and Jade. Each turtle has unique facial markings and a distinct personality. While snorkelling, you will often find them grazing peacefully along the reef, resting beneath coral ledges, or surfacing for air before returning to their favourite feeding spots. Eden closely monitors their health and behaviour, sharing vital data with the Olive Ridley Project to support regional sea turtle conservation.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The magic of the ocean is perhaps most vivid through the eyes of a child. Niva Kurumba embraces its educational role, creating a space where little explorers can bond over their underwater discoveries. Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love and respect for the sea.

Every week, Eden hosts several engaging marine talks at our kids club. Children learn about the fascinating creatures that call the Maldives home. We also organise special fish identification snorkelling trips for our younger guests, letting them explore the house reef safely while spotting trumpetfish and anemones.

For adults, our weekly evening presentations offer a deeper dive into the delicate science of ocean health.
